January 29, 2017 – Fellowship with One Another

Pastor Jeff Purganan

Scripture:

Key Points:

  • Emphasis on mentoring the youth.  Actively participate in the youth.
  • Jeff cited individual who were critical influences in his walk, Steve and Peggy.
  • It’s difficult to lie to yourself if you surround yourself with people who are truthful, hold you accountable.
  • There is no references in scripture to abandon children, the young.  Quite the opposite!
  • Children can hold us, adults accountable.  Can cut through lies and excuses and get us to face truth, authenticity.
  • Adults: embrace our role. The hope is we building them up to be brothers and sisters in Christ!

January 22, 2017 – Through the Generations

Pastor Trevor Smith

Scripture:

Key:

  • God moves through the generations
  • We each, as followers of Christ, should have someone who mentored you to Christ
  • Sometimes we have a hard time looking forward.  Our mentor can help point you forward.
  • Mentor invests in each of us to carry Christ, impacting and changing us.  Our youth are deeply impacted. Witness the impact on our body: Dominic in Mexico learning to evangelize, Jocelyn in Florida with an opportunity to share Christ in the midst of non-believers.  Brennan at Point Loma studying theology.  Youth here in service: serving communion, running media, in prayer.
  • Acts 2:1 – the model for the one church, all races, ages together.  The youth are absolutely applicable.
  • It’s important, as mentors/elders, to share encouraging words to our youth; show grace, love.
  • Reflect on the mentors in your life, the impact they had in your life, your walk in life.  What were the qualities that made them good, impacting mentors?  Look to be an impact, as a mentor.

January 15, 2017 – Holding Each Other Up

Pastor Jeff Purganan

Scripture:

Key Points:

  • We have many battles against the enemy.  When we go into battle against the enemy, we need help. Moses knew that, in this passage.  Aaron and Hur were at his side.
  • As a congregation, we are facing battles and we need each other.  We can and should call on each other.  We don’t need to attempt to face the battle on our own.
  • Society teaches us to toughen and face on our own. This is opposite of what God wants.  We don’t see this going solo mentality in the Bible.
  • Allow your friends and family to come along your side, to hold up your arms.

January 8, 2017 – Be Still and Know That I Am God

Rev. Gary Moore

Scriptures:

Key Point:

  • Who do we say Jesus is, to each of us?  How and what we answer is critical to how we reflect Jesus to others?
  • How critical?  Just in our district (Monterrey – Bay Area – NorCal coast), there are 8 million people, of which 93% are un-churched. We portray Jesus in how we see Jesus.
  • How we traditionally run a church (one pastor, one church building) is not feasible in today’s economy.  How do we change?  First we must who is. Life – Enternal.  Light – take us out of the darkness.  We have forgiveness of our sins.  We embrace this, we walk in victory – victory in Christ. We overcome the dominion of sin.
  • We try not to sin, but if we do, we have the advocate in Jesus to overcome it, to allow us to walk in the light.  To be salt to the world, to we can be missional, be communal.
  • We love as Jesus defines love (1 John 3; 1 John 4; Luke 6:27-36).  Our own self-defined love falls short.  It even calls for loving your enemy.  Self-defined love does not generate this kind of love.  Remember, Christ died for everyone, including enemies.

January 1, 2017 – The Presence of God

Pastor Jeff Purganan

Scripture:

Key Points:

  • We all need God – for redemption
  • We tend to make the Gospel complex, to make if fit to us individual, putting rules in place to fit us.
  • Jesus makes it simple in this passage: if someone is in need, fulfill that need.
  • If we can be a church that cares for those in need, we will be a church that is with God.  Is there something more worthy of doing so?
  • It’s not always comfortable.  It’s not always going to be cheap.
  • God is among us, though, the poor and broken.
  • This is not the place to be if you see God and ignore the call to tend to those in need.  We need to recognize the presence of God.
  • Where we live there is much need.  It’s tough, BUT we get to be with God.
