April 10, 2016 – Do You Love Me?

Janelle Stewart

Scripture:

  • John 21:1-19

Key Points:

  • The passages of Jesus asking Peter, “Do you love me?”
  • Video: Fiddler on the Roof, Do You Love Me?
  • Peter brash, outgoing, great leader
  • Examples of Peter following Jesus:
    • Luke 5:1-11
    • John 6:66-69
    • Matthew 14:25-33
    • Matthew 16:13-19
    • Mark 5:37-43
    • Mark 8:31-33: Jesus rebuke Peter
    • Mark 9:2-13: Peter witnessing The Transfiguration
    • Mark 10:28-31: First will be Last, Last will be First
    • John 13:6-9: Jesus washing Peter’s feet
    • Mark 14:27-31: Jesus tell Peter will deny him three times.
    • Mark 14:32-42: Peter sleeps at Gethsemane
    • Mark 14:66-72: Peter denies Jesus three times
    • John 20:1-10: Peters searches the tomb to find Jesus’ body missing, no understanding He has risen!
  • John 21:1-19: Jesus appears the third time after rising from the dead: direct Peter and the disciples where to fish (abundant).  At the meal, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him.
  • After his death, the disciples returned to their occupations after his crucifixion.  Rather than continue with the change in their lives, to move on with the ministry, they went back to what was comfortable.
  • Jesus was telling Simon Peter to go out, continue the ministry, to tend the flock.  Jesus wanted action, a commitment in being his follower.  He calls us to do the hard, laying our lives down for others, loving our enemies.
  • Do you love me? Peter is told to take care of Jesus’ sheep.  Care for them.  If we love Jesus, you heed his commands and teaching of love.

  • In reflection on loving Jesus, ask these questions:
    • Do you LOVE Jesus?
    • How is it manifested in your life?
    • Do you go back to your old way of life when things become difficult for you as you aren’t sure what is going on?
  • How do you show your love for Jesus?  Are you able to show the hard, jagged love?  Remember, Jesus is with you, giving you freedom to love, even when it’s hard
